In Vitro Fertilization is
where eggs from a woman’s ovaries are collected and mixed with a man’s sperm in
a glass dish in a laboratory or in other words outside the body. The phrase-In
Vitro has a Latin origin and literally it means “in glass”. This is a reference
to a container made of glass where egg/ oocyte fertilization takes place. The
term Test tube babies have come into existence with the same process. Culture
of fertilized eggs then follows and finally transfer takes place to the woman’s
uterus. A number of fertility issues starting from tubal infertility and
diminished ovarian reserve to sperm disorders can be circumvented by men and
women through IVF. IVF has a long history since the birth of the first test
tube baby. IVF has helped millions build and expand their families.
ART has helped people get
children and with research, success rates are improving more than ever.
